About the library
Library objectives:
1. Retrieve information as quickly as possible for beneficiaries
2. Provide recent and comprehensive information sources that are closely related to the specialized engineering field.
3. Organize information sources by performing indexing, classification, and extraction operations in order to serve search and retrieval operations.
4. Provide various library and information services such as guidance services, photocopy, and electronic information retrieval, which lead to supporting scientific research.
Library vision:
The library is one of the most important and largest libraries specialized in the field of engineering in the Middle East, and the library aspires to reach the level of international libraries.
To achieve this vision, the library undertakes the following tasks:
1- Developing the skills of searching and retrieving information in an electronic environment as quickly as possible.
2- Providing specialized training and qualifications programs for library workers.
3- Applying information technology methods and creating specialized databases through an automated system that facilitates beneficiaries’ interaction with the library and increases the efficiency and effectiveness of its work.
4- Developing cooperative relations with specialized and university libraries through exchanging information electronically via the Internet, which contributes to the development of the information network and its success.
The library's mission:
1- Creating an intellectual environment thanks to the available specialized and diverse collections.
2- Encouraging the use of information and communication technology that is compatible with the electronic environment in the library and modern developments in this field.
3- Understanding the needs and requirements of the library’s beneficiaries. The library ensures the fulfillment of this mission by creating and ensuring the sustainability of a documented information environment that is easy to benefit from and available in
a technologically and culturally advanced environment through the development of innovative programs and services.
Library specializations:
First: Providing and
obtaining new holdings in the library and recording them in three official books: -
1- Books’ Record: which includes: books - scientific references - conferences - scientific theses.
2- Record of scientific periodicals.
3- Publications Record, which includes: scientific specifications - codes - national projects - scientific research - maps.
4- The library also participates in the committee for purchasing international standards and codes and making them available in the library.
Second: Technical processes
include documentation - indexing - classification - setting the retrieving number for all library holdings, in addition to automated data entry using two different programs: (winisis, which is the program used in the library for 26 years - and Librarian A, which is the recent program that has been implemented currently since 2017).
Third: Library holdings
The library contains a selection of information resources in various fields of engineering in multiple languages (Arabic - English - French - German), such as:
1. Books
2. Scientific conferences
3. Periodicals
4. Maps
5. Scientific dissertations
6. Egyptian codes
7. Egyptian and foreign specifications
8. National projects
The annual work of the library:
First: The book fair,
in which the books and scientific specifications needed by researchers and engineers of the center are purchased. This is a work that takes months of technical and mathematical operations by the library team until the book is placed on the shelf.
Second: The annual guide to scientific theses,
which includes the scientific theses submitted annually by the center’s researchers. It consists of data for each scientific thesis in addition to a summary of the research. It is also placed on a CD by the library and distributed to all public and private universities in Egypt.
Third: Introductory lists:
The library makes lists of everything it receives (books - scientific theses - conferences - specifications - national projects) and distributes them to all scientific institutes of HBRC.
Fourth: Inventory system:
A committee is formed annually by the center’s engineers, to inventory the library’s holdings. The annual inventory is carried out through the electronic library management system (Librarian A.) by:
1- Placing a barcode on each container of the library’s holdings.
2- Reading sticker automatically via its own device.
3- Writing the data onto the computer into an Excel spreadsheet showing what is and is not present in the library.
Library staff:
The library staff consists of (11) employees.
