The department conducts the following tests for building materials, composite walls, and glass:
- Determine the coefficient of thermal, longitudinal and volumetric expansion.
- Determine water absorption and water vapor permeability.
- Determine the properties of bituminous materials.
- Determination of moisture content.
- Determination of thermal conductivity and Bulk thermal transfer.
- Bioclimatic and environmental studies
- Evaluation of thermal performance, simulation, and energy efficiency of facilities.
- Thermal analysis of building materials
Natural and artificial lighting laboratory
- Natural lighting research
- Study energy saving in buildings and harmonizing natural and artificial lighting
- Consultations and designs of electrical works and light current systems.
Fire laboratory and the effect of high temperatures
The department conducts experiments and laboratory research on structural elements in order to reach the best design resistant to the spread of fire:
- Study the speed of flame spread
- Flammability test
- Resistance of doors to fire
- Resistance time of structural elements to fire.
- Resistance time of walls and concrete beams to fire under the influence of mechanical and static load.
- Thermal imaging and analysis using IR Camera
- Determine the thickness of paint layers
Aerodynamics and Thermodynamics Laboratory The department conducts laboratory and field experiments such as:
- Study air movement inside and outside different facilities.
- Test the resistance of the external glass facades to water and air leakage and wind impact.
- Laboratory and field study of the movement of sand dunes and developing appropriate solutions to reduce their danger.
Acoustics laboratory
The department conducts research, consultations, laboratory and field tests, such as:
- Test and evaluate the acoustic properties of building materials.
- Study environmental noise pollution.
- Study sound insulation of building elements.
- Study sound absorption and acoustic treatment of halls.
- Study acoustic design and electro acoustic systems for halls
Scanning electron microscope (SEM).
The scanning microscope is used for several examinations, including:
- Examining the microstructure and precise composition of various materials, raw materials, and soil.
- Elemental analysis of specific areas on the surface of the tested sample and examination of crystals, tissues and fibers.
Photocells and nanomaterials laboratory The department studies and prepares nanoscale materials such as:
- Nanosilica — Nanoclay to be used as an additive to improve the properties of building materials.
- Conduct thermal analysis measurements of building materials
- Conduct and study gas sensors that are used inside the building
Radiation laboratory
- Detection of radioactive elements and measurement of radiation dose
- Determining the concentration of radon gas inside facilities
Solar heaters Laboratory
- Evaluate the performance of solar heaters
Paint Laboratory
- Conformity of paints produced in Egypt with Egyptian standard specifications for paints
